How to cite a dataset, report edition or single fact from the index

How to cite Canadian Radon Services Index datasets, report editions and single figures: cite the version you used, with its date and stable URL.

Cite the version you used, with its date and its page address. Every dataset page gives you a suggested citation in a box you can copy in one click. A report edition is frozen when it is published, so a citation to an edition stays true after later editions appear. A single figure is cited by its page address, its fact block anchor and the date you read it, until the public fact index opens.

Cite the version you used, not the newest one

Each dataset downloads as a “latest” CSV and JSON and as a dated snapshot file, and the dated file is the version to cite. The latest files change at the next pull. The dated file’s name carries the dataset and the date of its records. The page’s provenance panel shows the date checked and the next review date.

A study lives at one permanent address. Each dated edition is its own page beneath it, keyed by year, with a region suffix for a regional edition. An edition is frozen when published and keeps pointing at the facts and the registry pull it was published with. The dates on every page come from its data, never from the build.

A dataset citation names the publisher, title, version, date and URL

The suggested citation reads:

Canadian Radon Services Index (year). Dataset title [Data set]. SIUYA INC. Page address.

The author is the Canadian Radon Services Index and the publisher is SIUYA INC. Year, title and address come from the page; the dated snapshot file gives the version. Those are the elements an APA, MLA or Chicago reference asks for.

Every fact block shows its source and date checked. When a figure comes from a primary source, cite that source as the origin and the Index as where you read it. Figures from the 2024 survey are cited to the survey:

Cross-Canada Survey of Radon Exposure in the Residential Buildings of Urban and Rural Communities, 2024 Report, Version 1.1 (CCSR.24.1.1), released October 2024, ISSN 2818-8195. Cross-Canada Survey of Radon working group.

The survey asks that its figures and tables not be altered.

Copy the suggested citation from the dataset or report page

On every dataset page the suggested citation sits in a box you can select in one click, with a copy button. No study edition has been published yet. The first edition’s page will carry its own suggested citation in the same form, naming the series, the edition and its page address.

Before you copy, check three things:

  • the file: the dated snapshot you used
  • the date: the date checked shown in the page’s provenance panel
  • the address: the dataset page’s own address, as it appears in the box

Give the date you accessed the page, and cite a single fact by its anchor

Every statistic on the site is a fact block with a stable anchor of its own, and its “Copy citation” link copies a ready-made citation that ends in that anchor. To cite one figure, give the page address, the fact’s anchor and the date you read it.

A fact’s identifier is permanent once it is public. The public fact index listing every fact with its identifier is not published at launch, so until then the page address and anchor are the citation. Add the date you read the page: its last-updated date moves only for a substantive change.
